There can only be one…..

I seem to write about this annually, or at least think about it.
Every year, around this time of year, my group of cats become a little bit unsettled and there’s a tiny bit of tension that wasn’t there before. Mostly between the males.
Why? As far as I can tell, it indicates an unknown (or at least to them) entire tom roaming the area.
People talk about how neutering is about population control, but it isn’t solely that at all. Territory disputes between toms can turn terribly ugly; and are most definitely more likely to with hormones in the mix.
The health benefits to neutering a tom cat are substantial, but another thing to take into account is the veterinary costs that can come about when fight injuries accrue as a result of turf wars. If your cat is coming home with a slight nick to his ear, it doesn’t mean the other cat got off so lightly…..
A large number of cats in a built up area will always be a bit of a balancing act. But it’s made infinitely more stressful to both them and their human families if the chances of altercations are higher.
