Sunny Days and Cat Naps….

Cats seem to love the warmer weather, but it has to be remembered, just like humans there are ways to minimise the risk of negative effects from their sun worship.

First things first….

Access to water is always vital, but if your cat is an indoor/outdoor cat, it’s a good idea to take into account the necessity to supply water outside as well as in. Cats are notorious for not drinking the required daily intake, so giving them plenty of options about where to quench their thirst is pretty important.

Just a couple of other things….

Sheltered spots when your cat realises the sun is a bit too much for them are a good idea too. A lot of cats still want to be outside, but instinctually recognise the potential for overheating. So making sure there’s an area that takes that into account is advised. The shelter mentioned in previous blogs  are ideal if you’ve the space and budget. If not, just letting one of your larger plants grow in a way that can be used for shade is likely to be enough to make a cat happy.

One of the main points regarding cat care in warmer weather that can be overlooked is sunblock. Pure white cats and cats with pink noses are prone to skin cancer of the ears and nose, so ensuring a suncream is applied before your cat  is exposed to the weather  is likely to reduce the possibility of the sun causing serious damage. It’s been stated child’s suncream is safe to use, but there is a product called Filta Bac which comes recommended for this purpose.

(Sidenote: as with using any product, if unsure, always check the list of ingredients or discuss the product with a vet before application.)
