That’s not my name….
Following on from the recent blog about people challenging the laws in the UK regarding cats injured on the road – https://www.ailurophile.co.uk/?p=543 – there’s another topic being raised quite regularly by concerned cat carers.
Since 2016 in the U.K it’s been law to ensure dogs are microchipped, and people with feline family members are pushing for this to be the case for their cats too.
One of the many logical reasons behind the push to make microchipping a legal necessity is that instead of local councils being “encouraged to check for a chip” when a cat is involved in an accident, it is likely it will become compulsory.
In Wales, the law change has already been put in place from June last year, and most people are optimistic the rest of the U.K will follow suit. There have been various petitions to try and encourage parliament to discuss this issue, but to date, none have ensured the outcome a large number of feline carers are working towards.
Hopefully, the changes made to Welsh laws will illustrate the reason making microchipping a legal obligation is a step in the right direction to encourage a better quality of care and protection for the cats that are sharing our homes.
