In the bleak midwinter….
I follow quite a few organisations that help feral colonies on social media and have also assisted in a few trappings myself to ensure a cat’s safety. Because of this, I receive emails from a company called MDC Exports, one of the leading brands for equipment suited to the purpose.
A lot of people involved with trapping stray cats or feral colonies are individuals who are working around many other commitments or personal issues. This can make remaining near a trap for extended periods of time a little less feasible, and obviously, no one who cares about cats wants to leave a trap entirely unattended for prolonged amounts of time.
With this in mind, a new device has been created by MDC Exports called the SmartTrap. Here’s a little snippet of information about it from the MDC site:
“The SmartTrap Alarm is a simple to work system made up of a robust device that can be semi-permanently attached to any MDC trap. It works seamlessly with a phone app, allowing you to know when your trap has been activated by sending you an instant message to your phone. With a click you can check the status and location of your trap. This allows you to react quickly, therefore, reducing the time that the cat stays in the trap and is exposed to the elements. And with the ability to invite up to 15 colleagues to receive alerts, your whole team can enjoy your trapping success! “
I very much look forward to hearing rescuers opinions on the SmartTrap when they’ve had a chance to trial them. A couple of rescues that would benefit from this item are:
Friends of Ferals: https://friendsofferals.co.uk/
A Sheffield based organisation caring for colonies around the city.
Mansfield Cat Watch: https://www.facebook.com/Mansfieldcat
A relatively new Mansfield based organisation helping cats in the area that have been abandoned.
If you’re wondering how to help needy cats this Christmas, I’m sure these two organisations would appreciate funds towards supplies for them to continue their work.
