A change will do you good…
Following on from the blog, “Knowing when a cat is a bit of a Greta Garbo” some time ago, an interesting development occurred with the boy in question. He’s had quite a few life changes over recent years, one of the main ones being a home change where he went from being the sole cat in his home to a cat sharing a home with three others. His human family readily admitted there was behaviour he exhibited that they knew meant he wasn’t entirely accepting of this. The family decided they needed a bigger space in general, and a house move happened. This is when all four cats found themselves in an entirely new environment. Because none of them had seniority in the home and they were all navigating changes in territory together, they started to show signs of seeking reassurance from each other. The territorial issues that had occurred in the last home started to lessen.
Finding their feet in the new digs on a level playing field actually proved beneficial.
Obviously, not everyone can simply move homes to make a multicat household situation work. But this case absolutely illustrates the importance of a cats feeling secure in their core territory, and the need for space so each cat can feel they’ve an option about being sociable.
I’m sure it’s not a sudden transformation into a totally idyllic home with this group. But the move has definitely helped to make things better between them all.
